In these tapes the visualization was to go to a peaceful serene spot in nature, where you find peace, calm and solitude. I listened to imagery tapes ( Guided Meditations to Promote Successful Surgery ). I was always a spiritual person and she honed in on my already solid foundation with Christ in my life, as part of the healing process. She helped me to channel my anxiety into self-healing, calming, peaceful thoughts. My therapist was instrumental in guiding me through visualizations and guided imagery. That is when a friend told me about a therapist who works with people for pre-surgical preparations. I was convinced that I would die during surgery, leaving my young family. It was at this time my anxiety increased two-fold. For the pre-surgical visit the hospital had me fill out my living will. I found myself dwelling on all the negatives, the "What ifs".all the possible dark places a person can go. Surgery was going to remove the section of colon that was damaged. The scheduled time in the hospital was 8-10 days. Surgery recovery was long, lasting 6 weeks or more. I was tremendously fear based because most of the specialists warned me of complications, infections, and a possible altered state in my body.

So at that point I knew I had to make the decision.Īt the time my family was young. Plus, the outcome of an emergency surgery versus an elective one most certainly would not have the same prognosis or recovery. The threat was that under these conditions my colon could burst, leaving me septic and in a life-threatening situation.

I had recurring infections that led to several hospitalizations. My family has a history of colon cancer and recently I lost my mother to this disease. "Fourteen years ago it was determined that I needed to have surgery to resection my colon.
